like most of you (yes, yes, you too...), i began my query to "the" tripod by buying a cheap one... that i rapidly sold (it was not possible to tilt to vertical position)... It seems that i'm slow to understand, so I bought another cheap one (3 D this one), a little less bad... mmmm no, ater all it is exactly as bad as the first one.
In hollidays, i needed to take some night pictures and of course had not my 2nd -too big for the bag- tripod, so i bought my 3rd inexpensive piece of s..t , its so bad that i'm affraid that the wind break it before i even put the camera on it ! (don't laught on me, i'm going to cry)
Now, time ! i'd like to buy something that :
weight less than 1kg (2lbs), the less is better fits in my lowepro nova5 (32 cm - 12.5 in) allow vertical shooting allow me to compose without having to lie on the floor... (1m20 - 4ft would be enought...)
i will only use it in travels to take night city pictures, or to "have everybody on the picture..." camera & lens weight less than 4 lbs(2kg) (N70 or N6006 and 70-300 tamron or 28-70 2.8 sigma)
do you have some advice ? (and the address of a company for recycling cheap tripods?)
thanks a lot,
ps: of course, i'd like my new tripod costs less than my future F100
belgian not only eat mussels, they take pictures too, and will be at photokina
>When i said i'd like 1m20 height, it's a wish, it can be >less of course...
If the other measurements can also be less/more, then the Gitzo G026 (Classic Weekend Compact Performance) might be what you're looking for. It's a series 0 model (top leg diameter = 20mm), 135 cm high (91 cm without extending the center column for more stability), only 38 cm when closed, and it can hold up to 2,5 kg. The weight is 1,1 kg. Of course this is without a head. The G1275M (Magnesium ballhead - 0,54 kg) might be the best choise here. You could also cut the center column the have a few grams less.
Remember that the only thing better than a Gitzo, is a bigger (sturdier and heavier) Gitzo
Luc, I agree with the others, what you're looking for simply doesn't exist. If you don't want to buy another tripod that you'll have to upgrade in the near future, I'd recommend a Gitzo. But the lightest carbon still weights 1,5 kg without a head.
The only thing I can think of, weighting less than 1 kg, and smaller than 32 cm is an ISO 3200 film (it allows vertical shooting, and you don't have to lie on the floor to use it
I use a trick when I'm in the need to shorten the stored length of my tripod. The Bogen 3205 I use can allow the center column to pull off the legs leaving the legs separate from the column/head assembly. Most leg sets should allow this and it doesn't add to much to the set up but you do have to be careful not to lose the loose parts (rubber caps, lock screws, etc.). This gives you a 51cm of legs and 40-53cm of head/column depending on the arrangement of the Bogen 3030 handles. It is not a perfect arrangement but it is an option.
