My old Slik bit the dust today, which leaves me with the need to purchase a LIGHT tripod for those days when carrying my 6.5lb Bogen is not possible or desirable.
I'd prefer to keep the cost under or around $100 or so, and it has to support an N80 with the 80-200mm f/2.8 zoom. I've heard good things about the Velbon Maxi, but I'm not certain that such a tiny pod can hold my (not that heavy) setup. Any other suggestions?

I just went through the same ordeal and came to the conclusion that while the Velbon Maxi is a decent enough tripod for light work, it is too wobbly for larger lenses. Plus it won't go low to the ground.
I settled on a Slik Pro 340DX legset with a Giotto MH-1003 ball head. The legset weighs in at 1100 g, the ball head at 150 g. Of course for your larger lens you may wish to pick up a beefier head, but the legset seems sturdy enough for my needs. I'll probably mount my Manfrotto 352RC ball head on this legset when I hike with my 80-400, otherwise it'll stay on the 190 legset.
