"L" brackets othe than Kirk or RRS?
Is there anyone making an "L" bracket that will work with "regular" tripod mounting systems? or must we all spend $750 (ball head/plates/brackets" and trash our perfertly good existing systems? Thanks in advance.....

Actually the ballhead is the only part that would need replacing and that won't cost you $750. You will need to buy your L bracket either way won't you?
If you don't want to buy a new ball head you could consider a clamp such as the RRS B2-Pro which would screw onto your existing tripod mount (with the adapter bushing) and would allow you to use any L bracket or plate you wanted and would also give you the quick release capability that makes an L-bracket so much more useful.
In addition, depending on your camera (don't know what that is since you haven't filled out your profile and didn't specify) they might have a bracket that has the 1/4-20 socket on the side as well which would solve your problem. The F6 L bracket has this feature. In the case of the D200 bracket they had to have an opening for cable connections so there is no way to put a socket there.
So if you have a digital camera you might just be out of luck.
