Tony, some early carbon Gitzo's had problems with the legs comming loose, especially at low temperatures. As far as I know, Gitzo replaced/repaired them all, but I suppose there must be some tripods around that were repaired by the owner. The problem was the glued connection between metal and carbon, at the top of the first section of the tripod. When buying a used tripod, I think you should pay special attention to the condition of this connection!
7/3/2002 Wednesday 7:23 am est Morning Philip Thanks for such a quick and informative response. I noticed in your profile that you do indeed have a Gitzo G1548 Mountaineer MK2. Would you buy it again? If I might be so bold would you care to share how much you paid for it? Did you buy it new or used? Did you buy it with a center post or did you get that seperately? If so how $$? And complaints about it function? I am expecting a used Wimberely Gimbal head any day now through the mail. Its amazing how something like that can still excite me at 49...my wife thinks I'm nuts! My children just shake their heads..but they don't complain since I am the one taking all the pixctures of them during sporting events. Thanks. Tony
I bought this G1548 a little over one year ago, and YES, I would definitely buy it again. It is a wonderful tripod, even compared to an aluminium series 3 Gitzo Studex that I already owned (and kept after the new purchase). I bought it Belgium (where I live), new, without center post, and paid 26000 BEF, which is about 640 USD. The reason why I bought it without center post can be found here : https://www.nikonians.org/dcforum/DCForumID15/177.html#3
You say your wife thinks you're nuts because you are excited about the Wimberly you ordered. Well Tony, tell her I'm 44 and also am extremely exited about an Arce Swiss B1G I ordered. I just got an email today asking me when I'll pick it up, together with a Gitzo G1588 and lots of Velvia and Provia 100F :)
Especially with your 400mm, I think you won't regret a G1548.
7/3/2002 Wednesday Night 7:30pm est Philip A Gitzo G1548 for 640 USD is indeed a good price. B & H and Adorama in New York list it for 715.00 USD. I've seen other smaller camera shops ask close to 910 to 1000 USD...can you imagine that! I found a company in the United Kingdom called PROFESSIONAL CAMERAS. Have you ever heard of them? They are offering a Gitzo G1548 for L375.00. Do you have any idea what that would convert to in USD's ? If the price is right and I didn't get killed on shipping should I consider them for a purchase? Do you have any good leads on where I could get a Arca Swiss B1 or B2 at a discount? I've bid on a couple of them on Ebay but I have to be careful there. As I mentioned previously I just bought a used Wimberley Gimbal head at a considerable savings and its condition was amazing! The gentleman took really proper care of his equipment.
Philip, have you ever posted any of your work on the NIKONIAN site? I haven't yet...but soon! Thanks for your input! Tony
Tony, I have never bought or ordered anything in the UK, so I don't have any experience there. But 375 GBP is about 572 USD; seems a very good price to me (don't know about the shipping, and if you need to pay import taxes?).
Arca Swiss isn't imported in Belgium. That's why I ordered it in the Netherlands. As it's only 300 km from where I live, I intend to pick up my stuff in stead of having it shipped to me. As I don't know the store, it believe it's a safer way. If you want, I can give you my impressions on the store, once I've been there. Some fellow Nikonians adviced me retailers in Germany, but as I already ordered the head, I'll check these retailers for my next purchases.
I posted a few picks on the site, and I'm planning on doing this more often. You could find a few nature and concert photos I posted (just make a search for "Philip" in the author field, but don't go back too far. It's only for a few months I'm a menber of this site).
Question for the administrators : can you tell me when I posted my first answer on the site? I believe I registered a few months earlier, but never visited the site until I got my internet connection at home.
I bought my 1348 prior to the recent Bogen price drop from Robert White in the UK and saved $450. Now that Bogen has dropped prices about 30% on the carbon fiber Gitzo line, the savings would be less - about $150 - but still significant. Look up the older threads in this forum on this topic.
BJ Thanks for your input. When you said you purchased yours from the UK store..does that me you reside in the UK or did you order from the UK and if so did the shipping amount to alot? I'll ckeck out the Robert White site tonight. Is Bogen the manufacturer of the Gitzo or do they just distribute the Gitzo products?
I live in the US. A recent thread discusses the high prices Bogen sets compared to those in Europe. They recently dropped prices by 1/3rd, but you can still save a significant amount buying outside the US even with shipping factored in. Robert White offers excellent service and has positive comments in the photo.net user ratings forum.
Bogen is the distributor of Manfrotto tripods (with Bogen labelling) and Gitzo (as well as other brands of photo equipment) in the US. They don't make anything that I know of.
Unfortunately Robert White isn't a great deal for us in the US now.
I just ordered my 1548 (arrived yesterday) from B&H at $735 ($715 + $20 S/H). I checked Robert White as I bought my 1228 from them last year. The price for the 1548 was $580 + $100 S/H for a total of $680 before the import taxes. Last year my 1228 cost around $22 for import taxes so I was guessing it to be about $50 for the 1548. That brings the total cost to be the same as the B&H price. I don't know if the same holds for other tripods from Robert White as I only priced the 1548.
I found a company at the following web site: http://www.tranquilityimages.com/equipsales.shtml which is called Tranquility Images and they are advertising the Gitzo G1548 Mk2 for $630.00 for cash or check purchase and $650.00 for a credit card purchase.
You got the shipping right on what the approximate would cost from the UK...I didn't factor in the "import tax" which I must admit I was ignorant of.
Normally I do deal with either B & H or Adorama because of their service, but if I could realize a $85.00 saving not counting the shipping I am willing to take a chance on this company. Has anyone heard of this company?
I am the proprieter/photographer, "Craig Wells" from Tranquility Images. I established Tranquility Images as an internet based photography/photographic equipment sales outlet in April 1999 and have been selling the Gitzo carbon fiber tripods since June of 2001. I used to sell the Gitzo's on eBay but have decided to focus my sales through my website instead ("zone_advocate" on eBay).
Please drop by the site at: http://www.tranquilityimages.com and browse my photograph galleries or compare my pricing on the Gitzo carbon fiber tripods. On the Equipment Sales page you will notice an "# In Stock" column, this numerical figure is current at the beginning of each business day, so if it shows a quantity count, then it's in stock and ready for immediate shipment.
7/6/2002 Saturday Morning 9:30 am est Huants The sales tax only affects those who are living in California or haveing it shipped to a California address I believe...someone correct me if I'm wrong. Tony
Yes since you reside in California and my business (Tranquility Images) is in California all sales are subject to sales tax. That's a given for any business within the same state you reside in unless the state does not have a sales tax. That is why your order was assessed a 7.75% tax. Can't get around it.
7/9/2002 Tuesday Morning 7:45 am est Craig You might have misunderstood me it was a California tax question but I live in Steubenville, Ohio 43952.
If I ordered today from you either a Gitzo G1548 or G1549 Could i get it by late Thursday this week? I'm going to Toledo, Ohio with my wife for the weekend and I thought that it would be nice to take some pod pix's?
In order to get you either the G1548 or G1549 by Thursday, 7/11/02, it would have to be shipped 2'nd day air at a shipping cost of $38.00, that is, IF you were to place the order today. Otherwise it would have to go next day air at a cost of $58.00.
