Newbie need info on Sigma 400mm please!
Hi. This is my very first post here. I have the opportunity to buy a Sigma 400mm APO in mint condition for $300. I've checked with Camerworld and they sell for $720 so I know I'm getting a good deal. But I'm more concerned with the quality of the lens.
I have an N80. Will I be able to take nice pics with this setup? Thanks in advance for any input!

Run, don't walk away from the Sigma. A friend of mine had a Sigma seriously bugger up his F70. There are many terrible stories about their lenses falling apart, and their customer support is terrible!

I specialise in Wildlife photography (I live in South Africa). Due to the relatively high prices of photographic equipment in my country, I use Sigma lenses. Most of their lenses are durable, has excellent optical performance and relatively low prices. Up to now I had no reliability or compatibility problems with Sigma lenses.
The Sigma 400mm APO is an excellent lens that has rave reviews in various publications. It delivers proffesional optical performance and is well worth the money.
Definitely worth a look if you can't afford the Nikon alternative.

Could you please state with what camera you have not had any compatibility problems and show us some sample pictures?. Your input could be very valuable since the pro lenses alternatives are indeed expensive.
The Sigma 400mm f/5.6 APO Macro is currently listed at $719 (after rebate) at B&H Photo and Video of New York.
In fact I switched my original though of getting a 400mm f/2.8 Silent Wave and have opted for a 300mm one with 1.4 teleconverter that will make it a 420mm f/4. Cost is nevertheless high.

I have the Sigma 400. It is a fine lens. I recently returned from Ding Darling, (yes I went to FL in Aug), it did not rain all day every day, and used it with the matching 1.4 TC and got some publishable shots. At $300 GRAB IT.
