I have the Tokina 100-300 ATX 340AF which I assume is the lens you are refering to. I can't directly compare to the 80-200 screw type Nikkors but it is a relatively slow lens to focus. Much slower than the AFS lenses and slower than my smaller Nikkor screw type lenses. On the other hand, It is a sharp lens.

I guess this is what I am referring to, unless there are two modificaitons of the same lens. I have not seen the lens, just read reviews.
Tokina web-site says "AT-X 340 AF-II". The lens has a constant aperture of f/4. Is is what you have?
Which smaller ones do you use?
