I see two Nikon product numbers for their filter holders for AF-S 500mm f/4 lenses. The Nikon site says nothing useful about either holder. Does anyone know if the holder for the VR lens is the same as that for the non-VR Version II lens? Second Question: Does the polarizer filter in the drop in polarizer holder come out for replacement? I do not want to try to force it to unscrew if in fact it does not unscrew.
I just had a look at my new C-PL1L filter for the 500 AFS f/4 lens. While it does look like it can be disassembled it would most likely be wiser to send it off to Nikon for repair, if that is what is needed and if they do repair them (may need to buy a new filter and assembly.) I am also unable to answer whether or not this filter will fit the older series lens and I've not seen just the filter itself listed for sale. Why not call Nikon service directly for your answer? Best of luck and sorry I was not able to be of more help.
I emailed Nikon Customer Support asking the manufacturer's number for the drop-in filter holder for my lens or in the alternative whether the holder for the VR would work in the mark II non-VR. That question overwhelmed them. I got an email saying they would have to work on that one. A week later, they replied they did not know either but gave me the model number of the drop-in polarizer. So I called. The young man could not grasp the difference between the holder and the filter. He did say that no holder was necessary as they have a screw-in filter for the front of the lens. I said that must cost a fortune and besides there is a protective filter up there anyway. This is no joke. He said they have the screw-in filter for the front of the lens in stock. I asked what it was and he said it was a 52mm NC filter. The young man will call me back. All this after an on-line chat that resulted in being told they cannot confirm either the number or whether the drop-in for the VR also fits my lens. Under the Repair forum I just posted my experience with a CLA for a 400mm f/2.8 lens at El Segundo.
I bought a used filter holder from B&H that fits just fine. It was $149 plus a bit for shipping. As an aside, the Canon holder with a filter in it costs $88.95 for their 500mm f/4 lens. The Canon site also clearly lists the Canon drop-in holders with compatibility links to show lenses the holder fits. Just too much for Nikon. I am so far into Nikon I cannot get out economically. I wish that were not true.
