I am looking for a teleconverter for a 70-200/2.8 VRII.
My basic thinking is that I want the best quality TC in the 1.4 range. I need a little more reach for sports shooting.
Opinions would be very much appreciated!

You can't go wrong with the Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-14E II. I own the 1.7 and use it all the time with my 70-200 mm VR I with good results. With the 1.7 you really have to shoot in bursts, and have good technique. about every third image is tack sharp handheld using this technique. When shooting on a tripod the percentage of keepers is much higher. With the 1.4 this should improve considerably.

The best TC to use with your Nikkor 70-200mm f2.8G ED IF AF-S VR II is the Nikkor TC-14E II as the lens design was optimized to match the Nikkor TC's.
Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!

I agree - the 1.4 is the starting point for teleconverters. Image quality is excellent and AF still works well on the 70-200.
After getting the 1.4, you could consider the 1.7 or 2.0. I find image quality is essentially the same, but the loss of light and slower AF are limiting under some conditions.
