Will a TC-20E II work on a D200, using an 18-200mm Nikkor VR AF-S?
Any drawbacks or tips?

Yes, however you may also want to look at the Kenko TCs. The Nikon TCs are reportedly of a better build quality but the Kenko TCs will work with more lens/body combinations. Optically both brands are comparable from what I've seen.

I see you edited your post to add the part about "using an 18-200mm VR AF-S".
This changes the answer we gave. The TC-20E II will work with the D200, but does not fit the 18-200mm. It only fits the longer "pro" AF-S Nikkors, from the 105mm VR upwards.
The Kenko Pro 300 1.4x is your best bet, but I wouldn't expect great results from any TC on this lens.

Also be careful with the 18-200mm and any TC - the rear element at 18mm protrudes out the back of the lens (I didn't damage it when I tested my 3x TC, but the tolerances are in the fraction of a mm range so it's trusting the manufacturing tolerances of both the lens and the TC). I'd recommend zooming out to 200mm before mounting the TC and not zooming in much at all with that lens.
