Did some searching here, but didn't find an answer to my situation...
Is it possible to use my SB600, SB28, and SC17 in a two flash setup with my D50? Seems I would need at least an extra cord of some type, but I'm not sure, if this is correct, what I need. I'm guessing the SB28 doesn't have the capability to flash remotely with my SB600 mounted on the D50 nor the SB600 remotely with the SB28 mounted.
You can use an SC-17 to connect the hot shoe on the camera and provide a hot shoe for one flash. The SC-17 has 2 small connectors in addition to the hot shoe that allows connection of an SC-18 or SC-19 cord. The SB-28 has a port for the SC-18/19 cord so you can place the SB-600 on the SC-17 hot shoe and connect the SB-28 with the SC-18/19 cord. You will not have TTL flash control with the D50 so you will have to either use manual or AA flash control.
I thought there may be a cord of some type (even found a few on B&H's website), since I am aware of the terminals on the SB28 and the SC17. However, I couldn't figure out if this would really work and, if so, what cord I needed. You have supplied the perfect info to keep me for a while until I can afford the SB800.
>...I'm guessing it is the same with the D70, but maybe some D70 owner will chime in here.
Yes, the SC-17 provides complete i-TTL functionality with a D70 and SB-600. I do it all the time.
Think of the SC-17 (and the newer SC-28/SC-29) as hot shoe extenders (rather than a flash sync cable). Anything that can be done with the flash plugged into the hotshoe can also be done when connected to the hotshoe via one of these cables. The differences between the SC-17 and the new SC-28 are minor:
- The SC-17 uses the older rotary dial locking device where as the SC-28/29 use the new toggle locking device
- The SC-17 is a dark grey color where as (I think) the SC-28/29 are black
- The cord on the SC-17 comes out the front where as the cord on the SC-28/29 come out the side.
BTW, trying to use the SB-600 with a SB-28 is a lot harder than it seems. As was pointed out, you will only be able to use them in A or manual mode. IMOHO, rather than purchasing a SC-30 sync cord, you would be better off trying to sell the SB-28 on eBay and use the money towards a SB-600 (or a SB-800 if you can kick in some extra $$$)

Thanks for the input. I am currently weighing the purchase of the additional flash cord. Unfortunately, the value of the SB-28 on ebay isn't what I would like it to be (sub $100) so I'm not selling it. Plus I have a N80 that it still sits atop. Guess I'll just have to save my $$$ for the SB-800. In the meantime, I'll continue to use a single flash with the D50.
