I'm looking to purchase a digital camera and the 990 is at the top of my list because of its ability to digitize slides, but it's getting hard to find. My local camera store is out and they don't think they'll be getting any more; Circuit City said more or less the same thing. Anyone know why this camera is disappearing? Is a next generation Coolpix is about to debut?

According to hints the Phil Askey at dpreview.com, there is a new CoolPix that will come out perhaps in June. I don't think anyone really knows if that means a new camera to replace the 990 or one that will be above the 990 in the line. There are plenty of online dealers who show the camera in stock (look at cnet.com). The CP950 is still available and it's hard to see Nikon replacing the 990 after only a year of production unless it's pretty much the same camera with enhancements (ala the upcoming D1 bodies).

Thanks. I found a couple messages posted at dpreview.com just after I posted here, and one suggested the new CoolPix will debut in June as...the 990, with the same CCD but other new features. I believe a press release date of April 24 was mentioned, so perhaps we'll have more details in a couple weeks.
