I am a brand new D50 user and shot in RAW mode for the first time. I bought Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0 and loaded it on my Windows XP machine. I downloaded Adobe DNG Converter and Camera Raw 3.4 update. I transfered the RAW Files from the camera to the PC. When I attempt to open a RAW file I get the following message, "Cannot open'C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\My Pictures\Adobe\Digital Camera Photos\2006-05-13-2302-49\DSC_DSC0001.NEF' because it is the wrong type of file." I believe I have removed any files related to Nikon Picture Project 1.5 software but I still get the error. Any ideas what is causing the error and how to fix it?
Did you rename/move the old ACR 8bi file? I did both and moved it to a folder I called "Old Camera Raw"
Is the ACR 3.4 8bi file in your C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 4.0\Plug-Ins\File Formats directory?
Do you have a "common files" folder similar to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS2\File Formats? If you have more than one "File Formats" folder, you may have to put ACR into the "common files" one, too.
Hope this helps--if you've tried all of the above and still get the same problem, then I wouldn't be able to help you... Good luck!
The Adobe DNG Converter is a standalone application that uses its own copy of ACR to convert camera specific RAW files, like Nikon's NEFs, to their "standard" RAW format, DNG. Having it is good but its presence on your system doesn't alter either PS/E or PS. You need to place a copy of the newest ACR in your PS/E folder tree, as noted in one of the other posts, in order for PS/E to be able to read the newer NEFs like those from the D200.
The DNG convert could be used to convert a NEF file to a DNG. The resulting DNG is still a RAW file and the conversion is lossless. The DNG can be opended by PS/E even with early versions of ACR 3.x (actually since ACR v2.2).
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!! Your statement, "The DNG convert could be used to convert a NEF file to a DNG. The resulting DNG is still a RAW file and the conversion is lossless. The DNG can be opended by PS/E" solved my problem. This is the first time I have used a plug in and did not realize it operated on its own. HUGE HELP! Thank you!!!!
I am going to convert my membership to silver now!
