D40X Autofocus lense or camera broken
I need a little advice if anyone has the time. My 7yr old daughter was using our Nikon D40X. While having a firm grip on the autofocus lense she depressed the button to take a picture. The lense tried to focus but couldn't because of her grip, made a grinding noise, and then stopped working. Did her actions break just the lense or is it possible that the camera may need repair now?

Welcome to Nikonians!
Sorry to hear of you problem.
The odds are the micro motor or the gears in the lens are jammed or broken, and the camera body is ok.
Do you have a friend with a Nikkor AF-S lens that you can try on your camera?
If there is a local shop you should be able to test the camera body with a demo lens.
If the camera works with a different lens, obviously the your lens will require repair or replacement. You could also test your lens on a demo body to see if it works.
Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!

Thanks Marty. It's great to be able to bounce my theory off of someone with experience. I appreciate the troubleshooting tips. If I can't find a fiend with Nikkor AF-S lens then I'll head into a local camera shop.
