Help. I've had my D50 for several years without any problems. All of a sudden, it won't take pictures when set to AutoFocus unless I press the AE-L/AF-L button. When I press the shutter, the lens does try to Autofocus, but it won't take the picture. I've tried reseting the camera, but no luck. I'm having this issue with both of my lenses.

Does the problem exist if you switch to manual focus?
It may be that the camera is having trouble locking focus, in which case it won't shoot. Manual focus overrides this feature and allows the camera to shoot locked focus or not. Dust on or behind the focusing screen may mess up the AF system's ability to lock focus. If it shoots in manual then you may consider cleaning the focusing screen, which is a very delicate operation.

Welcome to Nikonians!
Sorry to hear of your problem.
Does the problem happen outside in daylight with a good AF target?
Do you have the camera set in AF-S mode?
Have you tried setting the camera in AF-C mode?
What exposure mode are you using?
Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!

IF you live close enough to the dealer, or a Nikon dealer, take it to them, and tell them what's goin on. I had same problem, and took it in. He went into the menus, and got it straightened out. I told him how I needed it to work, and he set it that way. Saved my shoot-and my day!
