Any recommendations on a good/reputable LCD screen cover for my D40? I don't want the hard plastic covers that sit on the LCD screen. I want a good protectice sheet for the screen but I want it to come in the proper size, i don't want to have to cut it.
Also, which companies make good tripods? I know there are a lot of companies that make tripods, which companies make better ones?
If you have a good quality camera store in your area check with them on the screen covers. I don't have the package any more, but I got some thin sheets from my local shop. I think there are a total of 5 sheets in the package that can be cut to size. They attach directly to the lcd screen. Use a plastic card (credit card works) to squegee the air out. They won't protect the screen from hard knocks, but work wonderfully at accepting any scratches instead of the screen.
I just mean that when it's up it's going to get in the way of putting your eye to the viewfinder....at least on the D40. You'd be constantly opening and closing the thing. It seems like its' made more for "live view" cameras.
And you honestly think that's a big deal? If it's going to protect my screen and shiled the viewfinder from sun while I'm reviewing pics (remember the sunshade can some off) Plus it costs five dollars.
I bought some of these things, put one one and hated it instantly. The images looked awful. I took it off. I've been using my D40 since last July and there are no scratches on the LCD.
In addition the tripod makes already listed, Slik and Tiltall also make decent tripods. Make sure you get one that doesn't require you to stoop over when the center column is not raised. Center columns are evil.
Completely protects the LCD and it's ready-made in the size for the D40/D40X (thus no cutting required). The maker also has it in other sizes for any other cameras or LCD screens. It claims (never dared to try it out) that it can protect your LCD from occassional bumps too (including a drop from three to four feet if I remembered it correctly). I find it good enough for me. I'd even bought another and stick it on my P&S Canon(oops) camera that I bought for my wife (Canon IXUS 70/SD 1000).
Anyway, I just want to add this link to those who wants other people's opinion of those who tried it. Just careful on your product you choose. There is a confusion on the "brand" on the LCD protectors.
yeah, just goes over the lcd and it's cut to fit it perfectly. Take your time installing it and you'll never know it's there. These guys don't advertise it but I can tell from looking at it that it's this 3M material originally produced to coat helicopter blades. You'll also see places using it in larger sheets to protect the painted bumpers on high end sports cars (that should tell you how hard it is to see)
You could pick up a piece somewhere and try to cut your own (I really wish I could remember the name of the material) but it's worth what they charge just for the precision of their cutting, it follows all the contours.
If you've got an ipod go ahead and get one for that too.
I've had very good luck with Screenguardz,..I bought them to use on the GPS that's mounted on my motorcycle. You get 15pc for $10.00 and you can order custom sizes, but I just used a paper cutter to trim them down to fit my D40.
I have the invisible shield for my D40X. VERY easy to install and works great! You can't even tell that it's on there when you're looking straight at it, but if you're looking at an angle you can tell it's there. Not a real distraction though. If/when I get another camera it will be one of the first things that I get.
I ordered it online, and was delivered to my house, less than 2 weeks, to Canada, and even came with free shipping! You can't go wrong with that at all!
I've pretty much abused my D40 in the last year taking it on hiking trips, just throwing it in the bag. Mine screen still looks perfect. In my opinion if you hit the screen hard enough to scratch it, it will probably just crack. Also I've found the screen protectors to be distracting when using the lcd.
An online store I buy from frequently just started selling plastic LCD protectors for the D40, D40x, and D60 (I think they are all the same). They look like the pieces Nikon puts on the D200, D300 etc. except they attach to the viewfinder since there's no other place on those cameras for a cover to "grab" onto. Anyway here's the URL>>> http://www.bocaphoto.com/products/new/nikon/nikonacc.htm
Check out the EXIM SPUC on EBay. No adhesives and it can be removed and cleaned. It comes from China but only took about a week for me. I tried a couple others but this worked the best. Really didn't like the Invisible Shield.
