Hey im new in this area, just got a SB800 and wondering if anybody has a simplified version of how to get around the thing. Also iv not done very many shoots befor and iv been asked to do a family portrait of 11. Will that flash be enough to get a decent looking pic. Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.\

First the SB800 is top of the line it is the flagship flash so you have the best.
Next as far as portraits go getting soft light is the key so I would use the light diffuser and bounce of the cieling if possible. This will give you softer light and reduce harsh light and shadows.(I am assuming you are shooting indoors).
Also with the D50 the default color spec is IIIa you should use Ia this is better for natural skin tones.
Last these are minor tips I would post in the Glamour/Portrait forum and provide the members with more information on what type of portraits and your location, lighting(outside, inside etc). This forum(glamour/portrait) has many pros who can help more than I can.
Again welcome and good luck. Jim
