I have just recently purchased a D50 with both the kit lenses. I plan to use the camera for photo's of my kids playing sports, basketball being the main one. With the lighting indoors, I wanted to find out if anyone could tell me if the 35 - 70mm 2.8 would be a good choice, or should I lok at getting a different lens.
Advice and direction on this is greatly appreciated.
My choices would be a 70-200 VR or 80-200 f2.8 if you can not get close. (Fast focus)
Check out the Sigma 24 to something f2.8. It is a better digital range if you can get close or Tamrons 28-75. (About same price as 35-70)
My experience in basketball courts, shooting Indian Pow-wows, says I have to use flash even with my fast lens. So you may have to buy a flash and then even you kit lens will work except the 55-200 is too slow to focus. (Average shooting is at f5.6 with SB 800 at ISO 640)
Depending on whether you can use flash. If you can not then check out the 50 f1.8 or 1.4 or the 85 f1.8 or f1.4.
The 35-70 is a fine quality optic (really regret selling mine) but may be a tad short for sports. If I could stop feeding my wife and kids for six months and miss a couple of mortgage payments I would but the 70-200 VR for sports.
Before you buy the 80-200 f2.8 D ED, try renting it or try it at the camera store. This lens may not focus fast enough for you as it relies on the torque of the cameras motor. The D50's motor is not noted for its torque. You might need to stick with AFS lenses to have high focusing speed.
