I finally got my hands on it, ordered it from a reseller so Its the Singapore Release Nikon D70. Got a phone call just as I got home tonight and had to drive back into Melb, City to pick it up but what the hell. Ive got a long w/end coming up so hopefully I can get a few pics and my thoughts posted on my website. I'm not a pro by any standard, in fact I haven't used an SLR for many years let alone a Digital SLR. Took a couple of quick shots while the battery was still alive and I was very impressed, also the look and feel of this camera is awesome. Hope to have plenty of usefull information (from a newbie DSLR users point of view) soon.
Hi AndyZ400, On the third picture of a barbed wire fence and some gadget, how far from the subject were you? I've been fixing my dinner while your pictures come up, don't know which is best, dinner or the pictures (hmmmm, latter I think) Marty
Andy, I enjoyed your photos and was pleased to see the quality out of this newest Nikon release. I ordered one today, it is not suppose to be released in the USA until late March. Keep the pictures coming they are enjoying. cb
We got ours in Hongkong late last night. My local store was allocated ~8 units, and it really did fly off the shelf. By the time I picked up mine early this morning, there was only one left. Preordering was probably the only way of getting one. I'll be testing it out in a flower show tomorrow.
P.S. I have the old Win98 system and Picture Project won't install. Looks like I am going to be shooting JPEG till I upgrade to XP...
It's good to know you had a good experience buying it online from Singapore, I am considering doing the same.
In Australia the official distributor seems to be pocketing an extra AUS $500 (ish) on top of a regular margin (US $999 should = AUS$1330 + GST = AUS$1460, but price quoted here at the moment is AUS$2000 body only). Hopefully a bit of competiton might change this practice.
My question is only a matter of warranty, was your warranty a international one? I ask this as one Sinapore site specifically said "1 yr local warranty".

I got the same price from my local pro store here in Perth, about $2000(AU) for body only. I was told the rep from Nikon had been in with a demo unit during the week, they seemed impressed with what you get for the money. I'd like to think once there is stock on the shelves the price should drop a bit.
I got it from jd-onlineshop, he also sells on ebay australia and in fact has a few for sale at the moment. Even though he is based in Brisbane, he sent my camera to a guy here in Melb and I picked it up there. The lense has an International warrantee but the camera is only covered at the place of purchase (Nikon has this policy on their digital cameras only). I emailed the seller and he said that if anything goes wrong with the camera within its 1 year period, he will send it back to Singapore, have it repaired and get it back to me (shipping at his cost). I was happy with that arrangement because I couldnt wait to get one and also the price was better than the local stores. The camera and lense both came as described in the box and both had warrantee with serial numbers matching the equipment. I looked at his feedback at ebay and also checked out his web site and took a chance on my own judgement, BTW my camera is just awesome and I dont regret the hasty purchase but on the other hand I have not had to claim on a faulty item to see if he is true to his word, I suppose its up to the individual which way they want to go.
