Will a Nikon Series E 1:1.8 lense work on the D80 ?

Yes, to a degree.
All Series-E lenses are AI-s lenses in terms of their meter coupling. The D80 lacks the ability to use the AI/AI-s meter coupling and can't meter with such lenses in any exposure mode. You must shoot in Manual and determine you exposure with a separate meter ot take test shots and make adjustments after reviewing the histogram. The D80, like the D50 and D70, must have the electronic meter coupling in order to meter. Series-E lenses are also not AF lenses, so focusing must be done manually.
