I just call this afternoon Adorama and talked with a customer service representative and he told me that Adorama does not expect any shipping this week, they don't have the cameras yet and won't be have them until December 19th at least.
He told me also that there is a delay in North America and they are waiting more news from Nikon. Apparently it's the same delay of Canada.
So who knows... Every moment i'm more certain that cameras won't be on December 15th as rummored.
It's almost funny watching NAS kick into overdrive as the countdown, based on a rumor, continues. It would be nice if Nikon didn't have an "ask me no questions and I tell you no lies, but either way I tell you nothing at all" policy.
I'm glad I have set me expectations to mid January at the earliest.
Wouldn't charging the consumer for a product that they do not yet have in stock be against their agreement with the credit card company? I would call them back and make them take the charge off until the item actually ships.
I too received an email as follows: Hi, <my_first_name> this order shall be in very soon, within a few days
Enclosed please find a copy of your order.
Shaindy <email@example.com> Adorama Camera Card Verification Department 42 West 18'th St. New York, NY 10011 Tel# (212) 741-0401 Ext# 2239 Fax# (212) 645-4533
I checked my credit card, I don't see the amount, but then again, the last amount posted was of 12/11/05. However, it shows as pending, and that could mean, they have authorized/verified with the CC company, but not applied the charges. It has been showing pending since Nov 2nd, even though I have received my statement, the charges have not shown up.
I think Shaindy is charging/verifying the amounts, and would only be doing so because they know they either have received it and being stocked or have confirmed delivery status from Nikon They may not be even stocking it on the shelves, and just have bunch of people sitting at the docks preparing our shipments. Shaindy may have given them Packing List already.
Either way, I'm glad to see some sort of email from Adorama, showing some activity.
Well the charge was pending for a few weeks since ordered, but today they charged it already. The money is not available anymore and the transaction appears to be did it today.
This is their policy: "Pricing and Availability: We strive to keep most items always in stock for immediate delivery (unless we specify that the particular item is available on special order basis only) In the event an item is out of stock or for any other reason unable to be shipped, we will notify you (usually within one business day) We Charge your Credit Card only at time of actual delivery of item."
>Wouldn't charging the consumer for a product that they do >not yet have in stock be against their agreement with the >credit card company? I would call them back and make them >take the charge off until the item actually ships.
Unbelievable............ those guys charged the cards before they shipped.
I guess, "buyer beware" should be attached to the Adorama banner. JohnG
What if they have called in two wks ago and said, we have the cameras and we could ship you in 2 to 3 days, but due to volume we have process credit cards in batches, meaning we may charge you now, but ship you in 2 to 3 days. I don't think anyone here would object to that !!
I've read posts where people have gone to local stores and paid 100% up front to move up on the list even though it was a pre-order.
I tell ya guys, those of us getting those emails, should be very excited. Whether they charge today, or 3 days later, who cares, we still have to pay them regardless based on CC statement cycles. And if there's a problem from not receiving the goods and you already have statement in front of you, just call the CC company, and they'll sort that out - no problem there either.
Well I do have a problem with them charing my card early as I am going to be buying the camera from the first available place I can get it. If they've charged my card, I can't order it from somewhere else if it becomes available there as I really dont have an extra 1800 sitting in my account.
That being said, when I preordered with them, they tried the card but I hadn't transfered the money from savings to checking but when he told me the card was declined it got me thinking as I wasn't expecting them to have charged the card at that time.
It could very well be that they are sure they will be shipping otherwise I wouldn't expect them to charge your card now.
I've called a few places and even though they won't outright say the cameras are in stock, they seem to be really excited and are very positive they'll be shipping by this weekend.
Well, I guess El, in that case they are tying you to their shop, like Pronrop said in his post earlier. This really discourages people from being on multiple lists.
I do see your point, it does not give you much mobility in say, walking to B&H and knocking at their door and buying it on the spot, instead of waiting for Adorama.
But I get a feeling they either already have them, or getting them tomorrow, and they want it out of their shop as soon as possible - possible due to insurance liability in case of theft (imagine average cost (lens + camera) $2,000 x 1,000 = $2Million coverage increased out of their normal coverage) or they want it out of their shop because they don't have much storage space.
I'm just speculating here, based on their email, that they are going to ship within 36 hours.
Yes, I have had my own share of problems with Adorama. In fact, they are the only major photo store I've had trouble with. I went as far as warning them that their next letter will be forwarded to the IRS. They called me back to apologize for their mistake. I told them where to stick it since this "mistake" has recurred about five times. With them, it is definitely "buyers beware"
I've made almost all my major purchases from Adorama and have had absolutely no issues with them... I also spoke to them and the impression I got today is that they don't have any D200 in stock as of yet.
I was going to preorder and changed my mind because he could give me no date. I wouldn't hesitate to give them my CC information and trust them implicitky.
I doubt B+H or any other camera shop will get theirs and Adorama be left in the cold. If anything WHEN they get the cameras it will be in vast quantities more than most.
To be fair I have purchased from Adorama and I was happy with the service. I suspect they have some positive news and as a result charging cards so they can get them out the door the minute they are authorized to. OR They're keeping people from ordering from somewhere else. (this I highly doubt) but I'd hate to be able to get it from somewhere else and not have the money to especially since it doesn't look like this camera would be sitting on any shelves in the comming months.
My understanding is that Adorama doesn't actually charge your account until they ship. They do pre-authorize the charge to make sure you have approval from your credit card, but that preauthorization is removed if a charge doesn't go through within a few days.
The good news is that if Adorama is preauthorizing today, they must be very close to shipping. I hope this is what it turns out to be.
Something I always find distatseful in business. I run a nice business supplying towels to hotels and the like. Every once in awhile I get someone in a jam who wants something now because some other competitor is out or can't provide it... If he wants 100 dozen wash cloths and I have 200 in stock I may sell him 50, because the guy won't come back until in another jam. Why do this? Because my regular customers may suffer and they may go somewhere else and buy if I'm out because I sold to the other #####.
I've spent $5K with Adorama this year. Will I ask or expect for special service and be bumped ahead of some idiot who listed his name with five camera stores? No! Should Adoramam bump me up? Yes! And they probably will...
Pay your money and wait. You will get ahead of others "on the list" and develop a meaningful relationship that will pay off in the long run.
Pete "Cameras don't take photographs, people do" - John Hedgecoe said that. "Expose for the highlights and let the shadows take care of themselves" - Ansel Adams said that. "The camera is only a tool. The best saw in the world won't make you a great carpenter" - I said that A few photos, here for a reason
> because the guy won't come back until in another jam.
Not really... You just might win his business.
> >I've spent $5K with Adorama this year. Will I ask or expect >for special service and be bumped ahead of some idiot who >listed his name with five camera stores? No! Should Adoramam >bump me up? Yes! And they probably will...
Just because you've spent 5k doesn't make you any more important than someone who's only spend 1k or any other amount.
And the fact that anyone becomes an idiot because they've listed their name with multiple stores for a camera whose demand will more than likely exceed supply I really don't get...
but, if you really think about it... they could very well easily be considered the smart one. Something to think about.
>Pay your money and wait. You will get ahead of others "on >the list" and develop a meaningful relationship that will >pay off in the long run.
If they required people to pay I'm sure there are lots of people that would have no problem doing so. If they did, they would go elsewhere or just end up paying. But they didn't.
That said, people are free to do whatever they want.
FYIW, last year, around February or so I was at Adorama when the D2X's began to trickle in and I know that one of the salespeople was holding a few of the D2X's for his "prefered customers" The sales rep was talking about it to one of the customers that cam e by to get a D2X and a 28-70 f/2.8. He told the guy that he was holding that and two others for his customers

I ordered a Leica M lens a few years ago from Adorama. They had it on backorder for a few weeks then my card was charged. I was hopeful it shipped. After a week, no lens. I called, and they gave me the runaround. After many complaints and almost two months later, I received a refund after calling my credit card company, reporting it to Pop Photo and many phone calls. Don't know if they have changed their practices but no more for me with them. Bob
really?! I'd love to know the name of the person you spoke to. I'll personally shoot him myself....we have no official word that it's coming in tomorrow. When it does come in...I'll let every one here know. -- Jerry G. Adorama-Supervisor
I like to check www.resellerratings.com when I am looking at on-line merchants. On a scale of one to ten Adorama has a six-month overall rating of 3.95, lifetime rating in the low 5 area. B & H Photo is 9.54.
Within the overall rating are sub-categories that tell a tale in themselves. The main reason Adorama is a 3.95 is they have a fairly high score on price. All the other ratings (customer service, buy again, etc.) are lower.

I concur. I do order from Adorama but only when I could not get it from B&H. Adorama's website is not as good for it does not give real time stock information. I often order something that show in stock on their website and get them delivered weeks later.
Adorama's customer service is not as good. I once called for a front lens cap for a 300mm f2.8 and was told they had nothing to fit that. I later on found it on their website.
I was told late Thu. evening that Adorama does not have D200's in their hand, and expect it tomorrow. This info was from Nikon to Adorama to me, a message food chain. This is actually what my sales guy told me yesterday, their release date is 16th. I wasn't sure if it was Nikon's or Adorama. He also told me that they'll ship on Monday.
I am hoping they will also ship me MB-D200. I've bought 36 AA batteries for $12 from Home Depot, so that I don't have to wait charging the batteries. Can you see the excitment here. lol
On order: D200 Extra battery MB-D200 18-200VR lens 12-24 F/4.0 lens two B+W filters to fit these lenses LowePro AW Elite bag Clamp flash holder
Adorama called me Thurs. late afternoon saying they had a camera for me and did I want to purchase. I had to decline as I'd already gotten the call from my local pro shop, where i'm #5 on the list, and they guaranteed me a camera tomorrow. Rather than have to wait for shipping (even the fastest would be too slow, I'm leaving for Ohio early saturday morning for a whole week) I figured the experience of going to pick it up myself would be better.
