D100, AFS Lens, Kenko Pro TC problem
Today for the first time I tried the Kenko Pro TCs with my D100 and 300 f/4 AFS lens. To my surprise it wouldn't focus. Not even the usual hunting. Press the shutter button, no noise, no movement. At first I thought the camera was in manual focus but it wasn't. I tried with both the 1.4x and 2.0x TC. Same problem. Next I tried my Nikon TCs and everything worked fine.
To try to narrow it down I then mounted the same lens/TC combination on my F100 and everything worked fine. Didn't seem to be the lens or TCs (I did clean the contacts on all pieces too). It was starting to look like a problem with the D100. Then I tried mounting the TCs and the 80-400VR to the D100. Everything worked fine.
It seems to be some kind of issue specifically between the D100, an AFS lens, and the Kenko Pro TCs (yes, these are the ones that work with AFS lenses - and the lens TC combo works on the F100).
Does anyone out there with a D100 have a Kenko Pro TC (the white/grey one not the black one) and an AFS lens that they could try this and see if they have the same problem?

My results with this TC and the 80-400VR and my newer 300 AFS, mirror yours. My solution presently is to use it for manual focus shots only, and try to sell it to someone who can use it for AF (it's listed on Nikonians 'For Sale') As for why? Who knows? It's not even supposed to AF on the VR lens, but it even transmits the VR info. Who can figure these things out? Short of users' forums to report on results, I don't know any way to get accurate information on TC applications.

I experienced the same problem with my D100 and Nikkor AFS/Tamron Pro 1.4 TC combination. I have the 300 f4 AFS and the 28-70 f2.8 and neither lens will autofocus on the D100 with the TC. The combination great on both my F100 and N80. The problem seems to be specific to the D100 body.
I contacted Tamrom regarding the problem and they were not much help - they said they could not guarantee that their lenses would be compatible with a particular camera model.

No problems with autofocus, 300mm f2.8 AF-S, D100, grey Kenko PRO-300 1.4x, grey Kenko PRO-300 2x, Nikon TC-14E, Nikon TC-20E.
The Kenko converters behave just as well as the Nikon, correcting the apertures in the finder, so the lens actually appears to be an f4.0 on the 1.4x and an f5.6 on the 2x.
I have no idea what's going on with your 300mm f4.0 AF-S. But it's not a problem for all AF-S on the D100 with Kenko converters.
The grey converters are the latest and greatest, supposed to support everything, regular AF, AF-I, AF-S, etc. Mine have never given me a bit of trouble.
