Just a quick question. Is it possible, and if so how, to turn the monitor on and use it instead of lookin through the viewfinder?
I looked thru the users manual and could not find that function.

Right at the top of the list in the Custom Settings menu: #1, Image Review. That shows the image just after snapping it. That is the best you'll get with any DSLR that I know of. Like any other film or digital SLR, the light coming in through the lens is reflected by a mirror up into the viewfinder prism, and not the CCD, so there is no way for the camera to get data from the light and create a preview image for you before releasing the shutter.
