I just got off the phone with Henry's where I asked to have my name put on a waiting list to purchase this beauty! She stated that the official release date was not until tomorrow (Nov 1), but that she would take my name and call me when they arrive (sometime down the road!).

I've called every local store here in Jacksonville, Florida, USA. Every single one of them say its all rubbish. They all have said that it is HIGHLY unlikely for anything this year. They have all pointed to PMA in February.
I would be very surprized if Henry's misinformed/illinformed me today. I didn't even ask her when it was due... she just blurted it out. I simply inquired about being put on a purchase list. This store has a very good rep. as many members of Nikonians can attest.
Guess we will find out tomorrow ... but wait, soon (this evening in North America) it will be Nov 1 in Asia. Maybe we will know in a matter of hours.
I was in NYC this weekend and went to B&H Photo. I had a wonderful little dance with a sales rep as we batted things like : "If Nikon were to announce the D200 on the 1st, would you be willing to offer a D200/17-55 combo with a nice discount ?" back and forth.
Net result was that I got nada, zilch, nuttin, bugger all out of him. Tight lipped they were

I spoke to my local retailer today and they know as much as we do apparently. But they did say that in order to get on their list (tomorrow) that you had to put down a deposit. They insisted that Nikon has changed its policy regarding pre-orders after an announcement. Nikon is apparently (according to my sales associate) going to divvy out the fist allotment of units on a pro-rata basis to authorized dealers based on their actual paid deposits by customers. Apparently, people were on more than one list after the D2X was released and this screwed up the initial unit distribution.
Obviously, I do not know if any of this is true or how Nikon could verify pre-orders by retailers, but if we started calling around tomorrow we might find out.
I'm on the list at my local store as of last Saturday. The salesperson said they had been visited by the Nikon rep last Thursday and that the rep had said Nikon was not very happy about the leaks. The salesperson would not come right out and confirm the date, but told me that he would check to see if they needed a deposit and call me if it was necessary. He also was suprised I knew about the 18-200 VR, but was happy to add it to the order too. He just said they didn't have a price on either yet.
Ordered D200 plus MB200 from a retailer in Atlantic Canada and they did not require a deposit. In fact I never pay a deposit for anything I order. I guess it pays to use a local retailer as they get to know you and thus know an order is firm. Why pay for consumer products before actually receiving them. My camera will be exactly the same as all the others. BR, pavank
