With all the debates about RAW vs JPEG going on, I decided to see for myself what the fuss is about. The problem is, now I have a memory card full of images and I cant seem to separate the RAW ones from the JPEGs. I have been shooting Large Fine+RAW, and in camera this is noted on the images. However once I try and transfer anything off the card they are all marked as JPEGs. Nikon capture doesnt recognize them as RAW, and in Photoshop the exif data even says JPEG. What do I do? Right now I am using the USB cable to transfer the images, could this be part of the problem? The files come off the card with the name format _XXX0001 then followed by (i assume the NEF) _XXX0001 (1). There has to be a better way to transfer the files and sort them.
This sounds very odd... On all the computers to which I have downloaded images from my camera the naming system is _xxx0001.jpg and _xxx0001.nef. Do you have your computer's operating system preferences set to ignore the 3-digit file extension?
Even if you do have the operating system set to ignore the extension, I cannot understand why Nikon Capture doesn't recognize the raw (NEF) files.
I hope somebody else can help more that I have been able to...
sounds like you either only have JPEGs on the card, or you are only selecting the JPEGs to copy to your computer, and when you do this, it is creating a copy, hence the (1). When I view the card on the computer, I can see NEFs and JPEGs.
YK To make the download process much easier and quicker, you'll be better off purchasing a separate card reader, either USB2.0 or FireWire, and download via the transfer tool in NikonView. This allows you to preview and select only the images you want to download, freeing up hard drive space. There are other sophisticated browsers such as BreezeBrowser, Photo Mechanic, etc. that suit others needs, but since NikonView is free through Nikon's website, it's an easy way to get started. Good Luck!

oh yes i had this same problem at the beginning of D70 usage and asked the same question , but with no avail . I use 2 pc one at work one at home , At work I just transfer them wiht the usb cable , at home the nef asr not recognised via the cable and , as with you it shows me 2 jpegs of the same number , BUT when I use a usb reader , no problem it reads all my nefs . obviously it has to do with some defaults in the OS , but I cut things short I just use the usb reader at home and the cable at work and all is fine good luck
