I found this - has anyone tried it? I understand the D200 isn't out yet, but has anyone tried it with the D2H?
>>> AUTO FP High-Speed Sync: The mechanical shutter of the D2H has a flash sync speed of 1/250th sec. The new SB-800 can automatically set itself to FP (Focal Plane) flash mode should camera shutter speed rise above the standard flash sync speed for Balanced Fill Flash in bright light with high shutter speeds or fast aperture lenses.
FP mode outputs a series of smaller continuous flashes that synchronize at up to 1/8000th second with the new Nikon D2H Digital SLR. <<<
Basically it has the SB-800 make lots of smaller, quick flashes while the shutter runs accross the film plane.
So it works well, the only drawback is a lower guide number. Basically the faster the shutter speed, the smaller the slit on the focal plane shutter. A smaller slit means that less of each flash burst will hit the sensor.
Producing multiple flash pulses means they're each less bright than putting all the energy into a single discharge (unless you're working close to the subject). That's one big factor in the guide number drop in high speed FP mode.
Works more then great for fill. I have used it quite a bit on both the D2’s & F6. I also used the none auto version of FP sync on my old F100 & F5. All producing great fill flash options when I wanted to use large apertures in bright light that would not allow me to use the normal sync speeds.
Hi Alex, I have an F100 and an SB800. How do you use the SB800 in FP sync with the F100? I haven't been able to get it to work. I never see the FP in the SB800's LCD screen.

Well that’s an interesting one. I hate to be the one baring bad information but you will need a speedlight that predates the SB-800 to work in FP high sync mode on your F100. Something along the lines of the SB80DX, SB28/DX/26 would be optimal for the F100/F5 to take advantage of this feature.
FP high speed sync works with the SB-600 too. You'll have to activate FP high speed sync through the in camera menu. IIRC one of the previews/reviews linked to here has a screenshot of the menu which actually shows this option.
