MB-D200 battery question

I never owned a vertical grip and I know it can use two batteries. My question is do you need two batteries or will these things function with just one.

I plan on getting the MB-D200 and if it doesn't work with the old EN-EL3 battieries (and I suspect it will), I don't mind waiting to get a generic battery for much less. I've own 2 generic EN-EL3's with 1500 power rating and they work just fine and all day long
