Are these two different bodies, firmwares, and designs? I'm invested in the D300s and just start at NYIP. I'm very very far behind in acheiving any certification or degree but I am an accomplished photographer. Will any resource of the D300 apply as well to the D300s?

They are essentially the same. The main improvements of the D300s over the D300 are a slightly faster frame rate, dual card slots, extra buttons (Live View and Info) on the back, and video. This was a minor upgrade as upgrades go.

Welcome to Nikonians!
The D300 and D300s each have their own unique firmware.
While there are slight differences in the camera bodies, their control layout and menus are very similar.
