Has anyone experienced this? Nikon 300s set to RAW, CF Sandisk Extreme 16 GB primary slot. Secondary slot set to backup RAW, Sandisk 8GB. Usually copy RAW from CF card via card reader to computer hard drive. PP in Lightroom. When I viewed the copied RAW files, noticed a duplicate file in JPG format among the RAW files. Was this a glitch, or something wrong with the camera? Understand RAW files contain a JPG for camera display.
It seems to get reported every now and then. I think it happened once to me on my D200. I tend to write it off as a temporary parity error in the bios causing the wrong file format to be written to the card at that moment in time. However, if it happens frequently then you probably need to get the camera checked out.

If you are still unconvinced or unsure, take a look at the O/S file time stamp of the original out of camera JPG (not EXIF capture time!). If they are identical then both files were created at the same time (Qual setting or mysterious camera glitch).
If it was the result of an accidental in camera edit, the JPG file creation time stamp reflects the time and date you did the edit, and that should be at least a couple of seconds subsequent to the Raw file time stamp.
On my D300, if I preview an image on the rear LCD and then press OK 3 times, I will save an edited JPG with ADL Normal applied. Since the OK button is immediately below the Zoom In button, it is very easy to do this by rapidly pressing the wrong button to zoom deeply into an image. By the time you realize something is wrong, your JPG is saved. I get halfway through this at least once every time I shoot at night.
Thanks for the reply. Using View NX2, the NEF file is time stamped at 6:01 pm when I took the original picture. The JPEG of the original NEF file is time stamped at 10:05 am when I started Post Processing with Adobe LR. CF files copied from card to computer hard drive folder. Can't figure out if it is a camera glitch, or something involved in copying and pasting.
I had a single JPG show up in a series of NEF files from my D300 three years ago. The entire session was saved as NEFs except the one JPG. It was in the midst of the only series where I was using a flash.
