I have noticed in the past year that when my D300 is on manual shooting mode but autofocus, it won't work and won't try to focus on something-even when there is an obvious subject to focus on-it's almost like the camera is turned off. Sometimes it has happened when the camera is level to the ground, but it happens with various lenses, etc. What is going on? Is this some sort of defect, or is it just getting worn out?
