Hello all! I am new to photography and trying to learn as much as possible. I bought a Nikon D100 last year with the kit lense. I am looking to upgrade to a newer lense, preferably one with vr. I'm looking on eBay and hope to spend less than $100. Any suggestions on lenses?
For less than $100.00 the choice of lenses with VR is quite limited. While you should be able to find another 18-55mm VR for that price, even third party zooms that are faster and have VC or OS will be few and far between. You should be able to find a AF 50mm f/1.8D prime which is 3 1/3rd stops faster than your 18-55mm at 50mm. Another option is the 35mm f/1.8G AF-S though I suspect you won't find one in your price range unless you get very lucky. While neither lens has VR, the significantly faster aperture will allow you to use a shutter speed over 8 times faster than possible with your 18-55mm.
I doubt you will find a Nikon lens with VR for $100 or less that isn't broken. Even the VR model of the AFS 18-55mm will likely cost more. I don't know about the 3rd party lenses but I suspect that any $100 lens with image stabilization will likely be a poor performer.
VR at around $100 can be done. It takes a lot of patience and checking here and at other sites like fredmiranda.com. Even KEH sometimes has a real bargain and free shipping.
I managed to pick up the Nikkor 18-55 VR for $95 and the Nikkor 55-200 VR for $114 (KEH) for my son. In fact the $114 was a relacement for one that fell out of a bag in the mountains, which I got for $110 (Nikonians).
