Having an issue with my D300s shooting in low light. Shutter will not fire, particularly in low light AND subjects are wear dark or less contrasting clothes.

At first I thought it was auto-focus.
-- I turn on AF assist illuminator - did not help.
I changed to manual focus by using the external switch. I did the same on the lens focus switch, putting that on manual also.
- Did not help.

The shoot is over, but I wonder if I ALSO had to turn AF Activation to OFF in the menus, as well as turning to manual focus using the switches.

Any suggestions or ideas?
