D300 & CompactFlash Card Question
I have a 2008 D300. I'm using Lexar Prof UDMA 8GB 300x cards. Recently, I noticed my card was nearly full but forgot to change it out. I never filled a card before.
What happened is the card filled and allowed me to keep shooting, over ridding the previous pics I took. The camera wrote over the other pics without any sort of alert message to me. I would have thought it would have stopped shooting or give some type of alert before all the over writes began. I lost allot of pics this way.
Is this normal function? or is there a setting to make it stop shooting or give some type of alert when a card is full?

This doesn't sound right to me. When my D300 fills the card, the camera won't take any more photos. I don't think there's any way the camera would overwrite photos that are already on the card.
Here are two hypotheses on what might have happened:
1. You thought your card was almost full, but you reformatted it, or downloaded photos to your computer, so even though you thought there were photos on the card, there really were no photos there.
2. The camera numbers photos sequentially, starting with 0001 and goes up to 9999. When it hits 9999 it creates a new directory on the card and starts with 0001 in the new directory. So, maybe that happened to you and you didn't notice that the old photos were still there, but in a different directory.
Are either of those a possibility?

When the storage card is full on any Nikon dSLR, the shutter will not release because there is no place to write the data. I have experienced this personally. There is no way the camera will allow you to overwrite images on a card because the shutter is disabled. Refer to page 399 of the D300 user manual where this is indicated. There is no setting to override this.
Hope this helps...JL

What do you have Custom Setting f9 No Memory Card set to?
I bet that you have it set to Enable Release which will allow you to capture an image and display it in the rear LCD when there is no memory card in the camera and I suspect when the memory card is full, though the image will not be recorded.
Try setting f9 to Release Locked. That should solve the problem.
If the last images were not recorded on the card, the camera is functioning normally. If the camera is overwriting files there is something wrong that will require service.
Good luck and Enjoy your Nikons!
