I use a nikon d300s, I have shot in raw and jpeg. Although I have changed the setting to large my files still come out small, 299 X 450 etc. I am lost. I am sure this is a noobish question for many of you, throw the noob a bone.

Got me stumped. Even at small basic I get a pixel count of 2144X1424 on my D300. Maybe if you could post a pic with the exif intact it might help.

How are you transferring the images to your computer?
What program are you viewing them in?
It sounds like you are using some image browser that is generating a thumbnail image and not allowing you to view the full size image.
Try installing Nikon View NX2, it is on the CD that comes with the camera or it can be downloaded from Nikon. Open the NEF or JEPG files in View NX and you should see full size images.

Mpix is a printing service and you view your uploaded images as thumbnails. When you select an image in an album and right click it to "SAVE AS", you are only saving the displayed thumbnail. When you order prints, mpix uses the full size image you uploaded.
Hope this helps...JL
