I had an all day outdoor soccer shoot yesterday (have been doing it for 4 years now) and yesterday, my D300 actually would not fire part of the time. The temperture was about 72, cool and breezy, and cloudy so that the sun was in and out most of the day.

I was shooting on manual with my Nikon 70-200 f2.8 at 1/1000 to 1/1250 sec, with VR Off. I was shooting with my vertical grip on (all the time), 12 bit raw, so that I could get 8fps. The battery was getting low and I did change it, but still got the same results.

When it wouldn't fire, the f stop in the viewfinder read "f 0", that is f zero. After a few seconds the f stop registered and I was able to fire. This is scary because I do use my camera professionally and my current backup is a D70. I do not intend to get another 300 or any other body in the immediate future.

While I have turned over the 9999 frame counter a few times (maybe 5-6 times), I should be well below the shutter limit.

Does anyone know why this happens and has anyone had the same issue and if so what was done to fix it?

A second thing that I have noticed is that the 70-200, with VR(1) on, sometimes makes a distinctive flapping/flopping noise, which eventually goes away. It is possible that I had it on a tripod with VR on, at that moment, so I will have to keep an ear on it.

Has anyone had the VR problem with the 70-200 VR (1) (not series II) lens?

Thanks all.
