Hi fellow Nikonians!

Ever since my P&S days, I've always used the half-down shutter release method to lock focus/exposure and reframe. This seems so natural to me that I've continued to use this method with my D300 (the OOB setting). However, in reading Thom Hogan's "Complete Guide to the Nikon D300" (for the umpteenth time it seems, lots of info there), he seems to advocate decoupling focus from the shutter release by using the AF-ON button instead of the half-down shutter release method. In reading this and trying it out (albeit briefly), it does seem to do what he says, but I'm curious as to what other, more experienced photographers than myself think about this method. I shoot mainly portraits, macros and landscapes, so most of the time my subjects are not in fast motion (except for out pet Senegal parrot, who is the most-curious and agitated bird I've ever seen).

Thanks for your comments.

Michael
