Hope my problem is a setting I have changed on my D300 (but I fear not).

History: Bought a Phottix Cleon remote release January 8, 2009. Worked fine with wired remote plugged in without battery (manual mode) or with battery in and using the remote unit. Since then I have changed several settings on my D300 and I may have changed something to cause the problem.

Problem: When I connect the wired remote part to my D300, it begins taking pictures at random without the shutter button on it or the camera being pressed. When I do press either release button, nothing happens usually but occasionally does. When I connect it and turn the camera on, the number of photos taken instantly changes from (lets say 78) to r 09??? When a picture is taken, the review picture does not show on the back LCD. When I press picture review buttong, nothing happens. When I press the Info button, nothing happens. When I press the remote release button occaisionally it reverts back to the number of pictures taken but when it flips back to r 09, I notice that the lens is searching trying to focus but never does. Also, even though I have the camera set to focus priority, it takes the picture anyway. Sometimes it fires three shots in rapid succession.

Could something on the camera be set wrong or do I need to contact Phottix? (unit is barely used.) BTW I bought some Phottix D300 batteries and had to return them as they would not recharge.

Nikonians is the Smithsonian of Nikon knowledge. If there is a question they can't answer, I want to see the question.
