Flash exposure question/test

I was taking a photo inside of a two car garage, uses the external SB600 when I compose if the side mirror is anywhere in the shot, the exposure is at least 1-2 stops down.

OK I would expect that, I then switched to the 2 different spot settings and there was no difference. Also tried BL vs non BL

As soon as I recompose the exposure is ok.

I am sure the manual on page 76 discuses this setting. I thought if you were to use this setting the flash exposure would use the "spot" area to calculate exposure.

My results show different.
