New D300, having a terrible experience so far :(
I just upgraded from a D80 and have had a D40 before that. Wonderful cameras and have taken thousands of great shots with them. You can imagine how exited I was when I could finally afford the D300 and it had finally arrived from Amazon.
Well it has been a disastrous first two hours, the pictures themselves are unbelievable and the camera is great great great EXCEPT for the horrible fact that the viewfinder is useless. The picture through it is fuzzy and unclear. so much so that it renders manual focusing an impossibility. I also can not read the status indicators through the view finder so that might mean that the problem is with the viewfinders glass? Or am I missing something completely obvious here?
Please help, I do not want to send it back tomorrow

I must have, that fixed it!!!! I cant thank you enough Dan.
I feel like an idiot for not figuring that out, at least I was wise enough to post here.
Now I just need to handle the stress of waiting for my 70-200 2.8 to arrive

Ha ha. I'm laughing because I did the same exact thing!
I've had 20-10 vision (better than "normal") all my life. Now that I'm over 50, small print is getting fuzzy (and I'm a bit grumbly about that). I paniced when I picked up a new camera, and the viewfinder was fuzzy, yet the auto-focus said it was in focus. Crud, my eyes can't be going that fast! D'oh! adjust the diopter slider and all was good.
Enjoy your new D300. I just ordered one this morning to supercede my D70.
