I appear to have problems setting the 'A' mode on my SB800 Flash when using using it on my D200.Although the 'Handbook' shows that it is possible, I can only get the 'AA' mode,am I missing something in the 'Handbook' or could there be a fault.

The AA mode is the default on the D200 with a CPU lens mounted. If you want A mode to be the default you have to set the Custom AA/A non-TTL flash setting shown on page 67 of the SB-800 instruction manual.

Hi there - my first post. And I think a useful one since I've been doing a bit of research about Speedlight systems.
From a very good book by Simon Stafford titled "Nikon AF Speedlight Flash System", I'll quote the following:
"In A mode, the same applies as it does in AA mode (i.e. the light is measured by the built-in sensor of the Speedlight, which may detect light that is not seen by the camera lens). However, there is no additional information supplied from the camera to the Speedlight to supplement its flash input calculations (lens type is irrelevant). Therefore flash exposure is often less accurate compared with AA mode"
"The A mode certainly has a place but it is confined, generally, to use with cameras that do not support TTL flash control. such as the FM2N, FM10 and F35."
"Hint: In almost every situation a TTL flash mode will produce flash exposures with greater accuracy more consistently, compared with either AA or A mode"
Bottom line is in AA mode info comes from the camera to the Speedlight (info such as focal length, aperture, ISO, etc) and is used when the Speedlight determines its flash output. That doesn't happen in A mode. And frankly, it does seem that TTL modes produce better results than AA or A, since the camera itself controls the Speedlight output, based on the light coming through the lens.
