Because sometimes some of us need to get images into a picture desk from 1,000 kms distance PDQ and there's often little or no time, or even opportunity, to post process and 4288 x 2848 is way more than a PD wants or needs - plus sometimes you can be sending from a spot with only a bog-standard dial-up connection.
