I'm not so sure that it'll be more popular than the D70. Amongst photo enthousiasts yes, but the D70 saw alot of sales in the point&shoot department too, despite it being a DSLR. IMHO this was also because of the offer with the kit lens.
I love the excitement when a new camera is released. I remember the joy when the D100 was released. I bought one a few months after and was forever disappointed. I won't be trapped again although I'm sure this is a quality unit but I will continue to keep my D2hs and resist the urge to look at the D200......FOR NOW!!
Not only do the specs look great but it's a great looking camera as well. That's one area that I don't think Canon has ever come close to Nikon on - the look and feel of the camera. To me a camera that looks good and feels right in your hands is part of the enjoyment of photography. Another reason I chose a Nikon back in 1979 and would never think of using anything else.
