Actually, the main problem I have with standard cables like the AR-3 on the D100 is that they screw into the shutter release button, blocking you from having access to both cable release and shutter button at the same time. Nikon makes you get the MB-D100 to use the MC-30 though so for now at least I am not doing so.
The MC-30 does have the additional advantages of being electronic, thus making it easier to have longer cable runs with less chance of mechanical issues such as kinks in the cable and so on.
