I never use 51 points! *
Nikon produces cameras with features that sometimes most nikonians find strange TO SAY THE LEAST! Nikon will include these features to keep up with the competition and not because "she" consulted with nikonians, for sure!
This feature is included in all bodies pros and not pros, with 51 points or somewhat less, simply because the camera onboard OS permits it.
The 51 points are going to try to figure out what you want in focus and your expected to go with it…
I use only 2 of the points options: • ONE most of the time, or • ELEVEN when I have to track a moving subject.
I use up to 21 point points for my birds in flight images and never have had a problem with it. I have used up to 51 points, but 21 for birds in flight seem to work best for me. For anything static or near static I switch back to single point which is quicker and more precise than multiple points.
