I am thinking about purchasing a WT5A to use with my D4.
I want to shoot motor sport events and send the images back to my laptop for immediate post processing and sale by my assistant. Also I would like to have these displayed on a monitor as they are being shot.
Question, I am a bit confused by some of the You tube videos.
Do I need to provide a wireless network to allow the WT5A to communicate with the Laptop? Or will it connect direct with my laptop and other devices, iphone, ipad?
Also the location that the WT5A connects is in what looks like a poor place to allow for a full grip on the camera body. I shoot hand held not on a tripod. Anny comments on that?
It seems a bit expensive to just take a chance on and hope It will work.

Establish an ad-hoc Wifi network on your laptop, then set the parameters on the WT5A to allow it to join that network. Additional devices like an iPad or iPhone can also join the WiFi network & view the photos, but only one device can be in control.
You can also direct connect with a network cable, but that's not wireless (so neither the iPhone nor iPad could see the pictures) and you'd have no need of a WT5A for that.

IF you do a direct connect to your computer you will need a crossed network cable. It won't work with a normal straight through cable.

Could not convince myself to spend 600$ for the WT5A and not sure what it can do better then the other wireless Nikon adapters do for 60$.
So I"ve setup a 25$ portable small router and a 1$ ethernet cable to do everything the WT5A can(as far as i can tell) and it works great for me. I send pics to iPad/iPhone wirelessly and can then mirror to AppleTV if I'm inside. I can also control the D4 from the iPad/iPhone. I'm not sure about the range however on the WT5A. I'm getting about 30 feet which is good for me.
It's battery powered. Found on e-bay from Hong Kong. It's a HAME-MPR-A1. Was 23$ got in under a week and works great. Can also charge an iOS device and can attach a 3g modem to it. Nice little router. Maybe 3" long by 1". Use velcro to attach to D4 base. Not as elegant as a WT5A but works well for me.
I originally used a Zalip CDM530AM which worked well but is about 3x the size of the HAME.I used a 3 ft ethernet cable and hold the router in my pocket. They both seem to have the same range but the Zalip has a replaceable battery . I may paint the HAME black so it's less conspicuous.
Thanks a lot guys! You did help me out a lot. But still not sure if I want to part with the cash!. I will think about it for a while and think it through some more and see it it really will help me sell more products. Bob Barnes Van Wert, Ohio
