My first post here.
I recently acquired a D1X, in great shape and with three new batteries as well. Took some snaps, and was in love with the pictures it produced. The view-finder seemed gloomy & dirty, so ended up removing the f-screen, and puffed the area. The f-screen looked really dirty. So cleaned it up.
Now the view-finder is like new, but the metering has gone haywire. I mean it is severely under exposing everything by nearly 1.3 stops. I suspect the dirty looking thing that I cleaned up from the screen was infact some kind of coating, and it was there by design.
Is it so ? Any other ideas ?

In the mean time I did my research, and found out that indeed some focussing-screens are coated, as mine was also. So when cleaned up it has made the metering system to compensate for the extra light reaching it. As a result it under exposed.
So lesson learned is never to clean a f-screen. Just puff-blow it to remove any dirt.
I have ordered for a new set of f-screens from nikon.
Thanks to all.
