I've seen a compatible one for £2.00 (not $) - correction. (I've edited my post). Still that is pretty cheap compared to what the branded Nikon one sells for. I'm wondering if it will damage my camera?! Normally I only buy Nikon gear but this is such a price difference....
I wouldn't worry about them harming my body, but then I'm the kind of person that will McGyver cables for my Pocket Wizards out of some Chinese remotes and diodes. The releases are pretty simple, they are made up of a 3 part blade switch. The only thing the switch does is make contact between the half press line and ground and then the trigger release to ground. No electronics, only 2 moving parts. I bought an MC-30 first and when it was time to get an intervalometer I got and off brand one and it has been working well.
Will shoot for fame...fun...food... a heck I'll shoot anytime anywhere.

I doubt it will harm your camera. The main issue is quality and durability. I use a Zeikos knock-off that I bought from B&H. It's lasted 2 years so far and cost about $10.00. I have used cheaper ones in the past and had problems with broken wires and connections that don't stand up to repeated flexing. But you can buy quite a few replacements before equaling the price of a Nikon version.
However, I seem to recall that gpoole reported some problem here with his D800 and a 3rd party 10 pin connection. I'm not sure if his situation is relevant to this discussion.
Second-hand. That's an idea. And thanks for the link. I don't usually go for second-hand because I don't want the hassle of having to send something back if it is scratched etc., but a cable.
At least it is Nikon too. I'm sure HHargit above is correct. It is just making a circuit connect up so probably not going to break anything. But, psychologically, there is just something about a £2.00 release and my new Nikon which I can't quite bear.. I don't want to be the guinea pig proposed by poster gearsau.
I have bought the majority of my kit from Ffordes and have always been impressed with the standard of the item when it arrives; indeed I have a D2Xs arriving tomorrow via my parents... I have never had to return any thing from them. They are quick as well...
