Image Quality - Download Effects
It is likely that no one knows the characteristics of the RAW files (D4 and earlier) better than Nikon so I am wondering if I am losing anything by downloading from my memory cards directly to my hard drive and then importing into Lightroom (LR4) versus going through Capture NX2 or View NX? Has anyone done a careful comparison among these RAW converters?

While it is true that only Nikon software reads all of the camera settings when rendering a RAW file, the profiles from Adobe et al are now almost as good. I was a CNX2 user for four years; about nine months ago I migrated to Lightroom. I find the Lightroom tools — especially as tweaked in LR4 — to have more range and power than CNX2. And LR provides the catalog function!
Bottom line Is that I can get the same end result using either software. Some prefer CNX2, some prefer LR. I would recommend against using the two together.
