Old D3s and New Mac - compatible
First, I was sickened to see that the D3s in in the Archived list when I went to check some compatibility issues! My 'baby' is only 2 years old and I love it -- but what this means is compatibility problems will soon arise and Nikon will no longer support it. I'll admit, I'm a bit more than upset with this news. Ok -- on the future, for however long it lasts:
This compatibilty issue between components is getting more than frustrating because I realize I have to replace my 1 year old Toshiba laptop because it too is 'discontinued' and will not support a new monitor I will need to bring my photography to the next level with my new printer that I purchased a few months ago.
Here is my question -- before I spend another dime on 'technology', I am planning on now purchasing a Mac. This comes with the Lion OS (10.7). I already found out, according to the Nikon site, I will need to upgrade my ViewNX to ViewNX2 in order to be compatible with Lion -- and hopefully with the latest version of Nikon Transfer, I should be able to still use Transfer to get my phoots from my D3s to the Mac (anyone have any problems with this?). My greatest concern is how well does Lion 10.7 play with NEF? (If you are not using Lion-10.7, respectfully, please do not respond -- I understand that the older Mac OS are fine with the Nikon software, and NEF file format). Because Apple will not sell me their older OS, I must ensure that their latest version will open/read NEF files.

I am running Lion 10.7.3 on a MacBook Pro and a MacBook Air. I run NX2, Lightroom, and all of Adobe's graphics software. Regarding NX2: I have run it on Apple systems before Nikon "officially" supported those systems. with no issues.

I don't use Transfer at all, on either Lion or Snow Leopard. In a pinch I just use the finder to get files into the computer, and normally I use Lightroom. NEF files are just fine.

I think you're taking a particularly grim view of the world. ALL of my cameras (nine of them) are are older and presumably less compatible than your D3s - and yet the only compatibility problem I've had(*) is that my D100 and D2h both needed a firmware upgrade to avoid a very limited AF failure problem with the 18-200VR lens. I did upgrade the D2h, but never bothered with the D100 - it was so "terrible" that I never, ever hit the problem.
Nikon in particular takes a lot more care than most of the other vendors to maintain compatibility, ESPECIALLY with their top-line professional cameras.
(*) I'm excluding the obvious limitations of G type lenses with old manual focus lenses.

Thanks, all!! This is really great news!
Yes, blw, in the past few years I have started to gravitate towards a rather grim view of the world when it comes to technology. "In the old days" (Windows 3.1 LOL) I never experienced so much compatibility issues as I do with my latest Windows7 (I have had to keep a 2005 vintage XP just to keep some of my old components). I was planning to buy a Mac before I bought the Win7 but read so many horror stories about compatibility issues, especially with the Mac version of CS3 back then, that I decided against it and bought the Windows7
. Recently, I decided to re-evaluate my past decision because I probably should not have bought a laptop in the first place, now that I plan on doing photo-editing/printing. That led me to looking into an upgraded Mini with an NEC monitor but wanted to hear if any of you Nikon pros had any issues with the Nikon software with the latest Mac OS before I delved into this any further. Thank you for all of your valuable insight.

Just to add my voice to the chorus - I'm running the latest Lion OS on my 27" iMac. I use Transfer, View NX2, Capture NX2. I shoot almost exclusively in RAW on my D7000, D300s, and D3s cameras. Everything works perfectly.
You shouldn't have any problem at all with NEF files on the combination of a Mac running Lion OS.
Good luck and enjoy the combination!
