Dear All,

I recently read a review of Leica's S2 system (hey, I can dream can't I? ) at luminous-landscape's website and read the following with especial interest:

"An interesting aside to this is that in a couple of discussions, both with the head of lens development at Leica and the Chief Technology office at Phase One, I asked the same question. Are we currently lens limited, or sensor limited? In other words, what is the weakest link?

The answer is we are sensor limited. The best current lenses are able to out resolve sensors with pixel pitches in the 6 micron range. Once we get below 5 microns (if we can do so without compromising image quality in pro-grade sensors) even the best current lenses may become the limiting factor. Note the use of the words "best lenses". While top lenses have an edge, everyday lenses are easily out-resolved by today's sensors."

Note that 5.0µm pixel pitch spread over an FX sensor returns 34.5MP.

You may be wondering how the above relates to Nikon. Well, pixel pitch for the D3X is 5.94µm. Regardless of the date at which a D4X is released, it will return an even greater MP resolution. Given that the sensor size will remain fixed, pixel pitch must reduce.

The D3X demands nothing short of the best glass in front of it in order to deliver the quality it is capable of delivering. My question is: if pixel pitch is reduced yet further for the D4X, will even the finest Nikon glass be good enough? Is 34.5MP the practical limit for 35mm DSLR cameras?

Cheers,

Rob
