After spending many agonizing weeks trying to justify this purchase for myself, I finally gave in and clicked the "Place Order" button. Having photography as a hobby, this is THE biggest "big ticket" item I've come to purchase to date. Damn that NAS!! It's currently on backorder, with no shipping date yet. Luckily, I have my D700 to keep me company in the meantime.
Hopefully, this so called "D3S", is as amazing as everyone says it is. It may be my last camera body purchase for quite some time.
>YAY!!!!! > >IT IS!!! > >Where did you buy it from that it was on back order? > >~Cathy > >one more time... >YAY!!!
I'm buying it through J&R in NY. My Bank of America card offers a 4% cash back rebate when purchased from J&R through BOA's shopping site. It's a sweet deal since you can't find a reputable online site that sells the D3S for less than $5199. They had it on stock a couple of weeks ago but I sat on the fence too long.
Ben, I heard Roberts camera is getting in a couple of refurbished units in a couple days. They come with a warranty and some of them are simply demos that Nikon Reps have used...... $4300.00...ask for Bruce
I was afraid the back orders at the NYC shops , NJ shops and Boston shops would possibly be indefinately long after the tragic castastropes in Japan. I found one D3S 2 weeks ago at Calumet on-line. No back order, and no sales tax shipping to NYS; Also free shipping - it was 2 day UPS. Bought it. Nikon USA had one D3S at their at on-line store, but their procedure of collecting sales tax up front, and then expecting me to wait for reimbursement was not acceptable on a purchase this expensive. They even acknowledged they had a legit NYS ST121 Tax Exempt form on file for me. But they still insisited on collecting tax up front! And twice, "phone you right back after I check on this" calls were not returned.

I have had several D3s's, sold off one to fund a D4 and just returned the D4 and bought another D3s today And saved almost $2500.00 . IMHO the D3s is a better camera dollar per features. It's a fantastic camera! Have a great time with your new purchase. Don
Ben, Congrats on your purchase of a D3S. Hopefully J&R has a few new bodies left in the pipeline and you get one. You might consider a Nikon factory refurb if you can't get new. Cameta has one in stock now. I purchased a Nikon factory refurb'd D3 from them and had no issues with it. The shutter had less than 10 clicks when I got it. Cameta extends the normal 90 warranty to a full year so that is a plus.
Hope this helps...JL

I just bought my D3s two monthes ago and it really is incredible! I will never be able to take advantage of all that this camera is capable of but the images I have taken of my kids sports teams in action have been very satisfying. Good Luck! Shayne
